One of my Spanish friends introduced me to this place, just round the corner from where I work. It looks very small and unassuming from the outside, like so many of the best restaurants do, but when you go inside you realize that it opens up into quite a large restaurant. The menu is delightfully simple, they specialize in grilled meats of all kinds, which come served with green beans, or half a baked potato – and I would definitely recommend ordering a side of delicious allioli as well. We ordered the artichokes to start, smoky and crunchy on the outside and beautifully tender on the inside, which a hint of lemon which set them alight with flavour. Then a pan de coca (toasted bread) topped with goat’s cheese, followed by entraña or skirt steak for me, and lamb chops for my friend (smothered in that delicious garlicky allioli). A brief look down the menu also reveals options for rabbit, chicken, steak, burgers, and much more besides, all simply prepared but unbelievably good. This is Catalan food at its best, it doesn’t need fancy presentation with quenelles and jus all over the plate, just good, honest food.
The desserts also looked great, although I was so stuffed I couldn’t manage it, I keep telling myself that I will try them next time but I never leave room! If you are in the area, this is definitely worth a visit for lunch or dinner, but remember you will probably stink of garlic afterwards!
